I’m sure most people have far more linkage than they know what to do with. I could share with you my OPML list of blogs, a sprawling mass of feeds on food, restaurants, photography, web design, Mac stuff… but I expect you have your own lists that you can’t quite keep up with either (and if you don’t, well that way madness lies and I’m not going to be your pusher).
I do note and share individual articles I’ve been reading both through RSS and a weekly-ish roundup. But I wanted a place where I could share those sites that I return to again and again, often year after year. Ones to be read with attention on an unhurried Sunday morning with a cup of tea. The writers whose posts I greet with genuine excitement, rather than a sinking feeling of oh god, yet another post on cupcakes/macarons/whoopie pies to delete. It’s an occasionally updated (June 2011), brutally curated list – considering they’ve been culled from a pool of thousands, I think they’re definitely worth a little attention. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Food
- Hungry Amateurs Finally, two people who can come up with more bad-taste food puns than me. Ultra-committed hard-core foodies living in Paris who know how to write.
- Recipe rifle Pisstaker and possibly as much of a slapdash cook as I am. Admirably bitchy.
- Sasasunakku Well-travelled, well written and likes her food. Also a fellow sufferer of hangrrr.
- the blue hour This guy takes the kind of photos, some of food, that I would *love* to take.
- The Catty Life A kindred lives-for-food-er who bowls me over with food enthusiasm. I want to go to her potluck dinners.
Italian
- A modo mio She dedicates three posts to the technicalities of pasta frolla. My kinda girl.
- La cucina di Lalla There are many amazing Italian food blogs, but if you want an idea of what Italians actually eat, I don’t think you can go wrong with these recipes from a Milanese hairdresser.
- Ombra nel portico Discovered via Alex’s incredibly detailed, useful and yes, nerdy, post about candied orange peel.
- Profumo di lievito 100% yeast, 100% of the time. Just authentic technique and recipes from an Italian baker.
Random lives
- but she's a girl… UK academic who writes, always engagingly, on geekery, craft projects, off-beat music and her awesome cats.
- Logic Matters Blog of a Cambridge philosopher, who happens to be my dad. Music, logic, grumbles and enthusiasms. Not quite as many rants as you’d think.
- Think Denk Jeremy Denk is a concert pianist who I saw play, stunningly, in Miami. Then I googled him and found his blog: engaging, funny and intelligent thoughts about classical music, and I love his musically annotated posts about why particular pieces work.
- Why Miss Jones… In her element during the UK Strictly Come Dancing season, but consistently able to make me snort bran flakes out of my nose with laughter. Also check out her side blog, Glove on the Rocks.
- Wil Wheaton That guy who played Wes Crusher in STTNG – loud and proud total geekdom here as well as raising stepkids and finding his inner writer.
